We hope that your kitchen matches your food: hot and tasty. However, if you feel it’s cold or overdone (the room, not the food!) we have a few tips to help you cook up a gorgeous space that only heightens the haute cuisine prepared within.
Think First
Before finalizing any kitchen plans, you should make sure you know how many people cook and clean up at a time. Where do you chop and cut? How many platters do you lay down at once, and where do you want to put them? How much storage do you want (or, if you want too much, how much do you need?)
A good way to get started on your kitchen is to keep a diary. Just do it for a week. Jot down every visit, what you did, what areas were used. Painstaking, we know. But totally worth it. Keeping a weeklong diary of kitchen activity can help you to answer these important questions.
Open it Up
Does your kitchen feel confined? Open it up! Try removing the wall that separates it from the rest of the house and replace it with a partial-height ledge, six inches taller than the kitchen’s counters. This new partition will screen the cooktop surfaces and provide additional, always-needed counter space. And, during parties, it can serve as a buffet.
Sweeten the Deal with Honeycombs
If you don’t have the money or time to build a partition wall, think Honeycomb Shades. MyBlinds Honeycombs in a vertical application (they slide left to right, instead of up and down) may also be used. You can close them to hide the chaos of the cooking, and open them wide when the final presentation is ready.
Windows of Opportunity
Windows invite natural light into a room, and throw in the sense of openness at no extra charge. If you’re thinking of windows, be sure to think of the following, too:
Look Up!
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! And you can see BOTH through a skylight! These skyward facing ceiling windows fill the kitchen with natural light. Imagine eating breakfast right under the sun (or sneaking a snack under the moon). Skylights also let you keep your precious wall space for cabinets and appliances.
Just be sure to cover that skylight with Honeycomb Shades which come in a special skylight application, that helps to filter the sun when its at its strongest.
