Designing with Natural Light

Natural light. Think of it as a design accent created by Mother Nature herself. You can’t buy it in a store or create it on your own. But, if you know how to handle and control this luminescence, you can take advantage of its brilliance and add character and depth to your home. Here’s how:

Northern Exposure
Light entering through the north is the clearest, most even and consistent light. This is why artists prefer it in their studios.  Often considered “cold light”, it has a cool, bluish cast.

Your best bet: Pick something that gently filters this clean and clear light. Try Honeycomb Shades. This choice also guarantees extra energy efficiency, which is good for the environment, and your energy bill.

Eastern Influence
Also known as “morning light,” eastern light is warm and bright. It’s also clear because impurities from the previous day have settled while you were asleep.  Zen in its nature, eastern light is the most balanced, (also known as full-spectrum light). Finally, this light might be warm, especially in the morning – heating up your room quickly during the day.

Your best bet: This is a job for MyBlinds Sheer Shadings.  Their sheer facing and fabric vanes give you superior privacy and light control. Plus, they almost seem to glow with that clean eastern light coming through the sheer. It’s elegance to the max.

Westward Ho!
When you think West, think hot, hot, hot! Light from west-facing windows is the warmest in color and physically the hottest, since the atmosphere heats up during the day.  This light is also often hazy, as the impurities of the day have come up and will now linger until nightfall. This strong light also has the power to damage many of your valuables, including wood furniture and colored fabrics.

Your best bet: You need a window treatment that offers UV protection and can help you control the light. We recommend Wood Blinds, Faux Wood Blinds or Sheer Shadings. Each grants you ample light control; you can tilt the vanes to direct sunlight in one way or another, or to close it out almost entirely.

Southern Hospitality
Year-round and golden-glowing, southern light is the most important type of light you will deal with. While that glow is beautiful, it can also compromise your valuables with its consistent heat and powerful UV rays.

Your best bet: UV-stable fabrics and treatments are the best way to achieve southern comfort. Think Roller Shades and Honeycomb Shades.  You can also use the same products recommended for western light – Wood Blinds, Faux Wood Blinds or Sheer Shadings.

If you’re adding windows
If you are fortunate enough to be able to put new windows into your room, keep the following in mind.

  • Windows high on an exterior wall admit light deep into the room

  • Low or wide windows bring in the light in shallow swaths

  • In small rooms, the presence of several windows will offer a more even distribution of natural light; so will groupings of windows in a large space.
